Arabic in Adobe FLASH CS5

I was interested in something which concerns Flash designers & developers particularly in this (Middle East) part of the world in almost every Flash project they work on. That is Arabic support in Flash, which was not there in any older version of Flash.

To find the answer for same I found out http://cs5.org/ and ended up reading this post

I watched the above video to the end but in last 10 mins i got really excited when the guy started talking about vertical (Japnese) and RTL (Arabic) languages support in Flash CS5.

But at the end of Arabic example when the guy renders flash file to create swf, i was disappointed to saw nothing new except the same old problem. As the guy didn’t know Arabic language & its characters, he didn’t feel the difference between the text he copied and pasted in flash and the text which flash rendered as swf.

As everybody else I am also desperately waiting for Adobe Creative Suite 5 (Adobe CS5) & especially for Adobe Flash CS5 for number of reasons, few of which are that Adobe Flash CS5 have now

New text capabilities via the Text Layout Framework (TLF)
XML based FLA files
Code Snippets panel

Developing iPhone native application in flash is no doubt a breakthrough and opens a whole world of new ideas & business opportunities, but if Adobe provides complete support of Arabic in Flash CS5 that will really help Arabic Flash Designers & Developers to create iPhone apps in Arabic with lot of ease.

In past I have posted some tutorials and flash codes to import arabic in flash using xml and css and also about Flaraby.

Now you can download Flaraby AS3 as an Adobe Flex and Adobe Air component (SWC) that enables rendering Arabic, Persian or Urdu text together with Latin (eg. English, French, Spanish or Italian) text in SWF files at runtime.

Flaraby3 – Flash Component for Arabic in Flash is Available

Thanks to shagarah that now we have Flaraby3 available to download.

Some basic features of this flash components are

Flaraby3 helps developer to import arabic text in flash
Flaraby3 supports Tashkeel in Arabic text.
Flaraby3 supports the “embedFonts” property which enables the .swf file to display the Arabic text even if the target user doesn’t have Arabic language installed. However, due to the way the fonts are made, only some fonts succeed to show correctly, examples are “Traditional Arabic” and “Andalous”.
Support Html Tags.

There are few drawbacks but I think shagarah will INSHALLAH solve this small issues which are

Multiple text formats are NOT supported in the same textField.
You MUST use a TextFormat object.

Overall Flaraby is a one of the best and easiest solution.

You can download Flaraby3 Lite from here. You can also doownload the component from the box widget on the sidebar. A Solution similar to this but with xml and css is here for arabic in flash, drawback of this solution is end user must have arabic local install on its operating system

Flaraby – Arabic Support in Flash

Shagarah, One of Creative UAE reader commented on a post which was arabic in flash through xml & css. I thought its better to make a new post on the basis of the information Shagarah provided us.

Adobe have a component name as Flaraby which can display arabic and english text in .swf files at runtime side by side in a same sentence. It supports 2 fonts “Traditional Arabic” and “Andalous” for now. It acctully embed the arabic font into swf to show the arabic text, which means the final application does not need an Arabic-enabled system to work on

Its price is $10 and you can download it from Adobe by clicking here.
It was developed by beemode, a company based in Egypt.

Akhbarakom is an application based on Flaraby technology to display Arabic text.

I think its a great flash component but if anyone is not in the mood of spending money, you can have a complete free solution on arabic in flash post. You can use arabic(rtl) text in same sentence with english text.

Drawback is end user should have arabic support installed on his/her OS.
On Windows XP you can do it by going into control panel then click on regional & language support and then click on Languages tab and check Install files for East Asian languages. It will ask for your Windows Installation CD.

Arabic in Flash With Few Changes

One of reader mentioned that if in this arabic flash sample, can we put arabic & english in a same line side by side.

So i made small changes in the previous sample. Only thing that you have to be careful about is when you are typing the arabic text with english, when you are writing ltr with rtl it sometime gives you a headche.

Arabic in Flash using xml & css

Few days back i was at an interview and the guy asked me they were having some trouble in importing arabic text in flash from xml or text file, the problem they were facing was to make the arabic text right to left.

I tried it at home and i figured it out that its very easy to import text from xml into flash but to control it from right to left i had to use css so that we can change the font type to Arial and its direction to right, by the way if you are using textbox then its pretty much easy, no need of css but if you are using complex text components like textarea and tree then i think this technique will save you lot time.
